15 Jul Shake up at CBC News

CanWest’s David Akin and Channel Canada were quick to report this afternoon's shakeup at the CBC Ottawa bureau. Presumably this is the start of the “news renewal” announcements.

Here are the bullet points on today’s shake up:

As MediaStyle reported June 3rd, “Evan Solomon will host an expanded political show from Ottawa covering stories of policy, power... The program launches this fall from 5-7 p.m. ET on CBC Newsworld.”

  • Terry Milewski, CBC News' new senior correspondent in Ottawa
  • Keith Boag, American West Coast correspondent based in Los Angeles
  • Susan Bonner, moved to Washington bureau
  • David Common, moves to a new position in New York City

Another rumour coming to light this afternoon is Amanda Lang and Kevin O'Leary may jump ship from BNN and join the Newsworld team.  O’Leary is familiar to CBC audiences as part of the Diane Buckner show, "Dragon’s Den."

So who’s going to be the new Parliamentary bureau chief? Boag was amazing at that job, and any replacement no matter how good of a journalist, won’t be able to make up for the loss in connections and friendships Boag cultivated over the years. LA seems like a CBC wasteland…I don’t get it.

Milewski always bothered me. From time to time he fails to hide his bias, and while we didn’t usually see him too much since he was the Vancouver guy, we’re gonna see much more of him now if he’s really going to be heading up Ottawa. That’s unfortunate. Good thing for Vancouver though!

I like the idea of a new spot in NYC, but David Common was great from Europe (and occasionally Africa).

Finally, I really hope they don’t inject too much economics into the new show. I know they’re trying to roll together the two time slots, but hopefully they keep the separation. CBC was king in that timeslot, I hope they can keep it. Seeing the politicians tussle with each other and being moderated so well by Newman was a treat. I think Solomon can do it, but only if CBC Execs let him. I don’t have a lot of faith in CBC management though…

Evan Solomon??? … the voice of the Liberal party within the CBC ????

What, Kevin O’Leary, the best living caricature of the proverbial “greedy capitalist” in Canada, is joining Mother Corp’s Newsworld?
Surely government ownership of media is completely against Mr. O’Leary’s free-marketeer religion, isn’t it?

O’Leary’s a guy who likes to say “it’s ALL about the money”, and when he chants that fave mantra of his, you know he means it.
Others are content to merely act as if, to them, it’s all about the money, but Kevin is never shy to declare his credo loudly publicly!

If I had a choice, I’d say leave him at BNN, or better yet may he quietly retire with the many hundreds of $millions he made when he sold his Softkey co. to Mattel for over a $Billion near the top of the tech bubble. How’s that for timing?

I used to find O’Leary amusing, but now I find his unrepentent, unbridled greed and free-marketeer fundamentalism tiresome.

I agree with Bob B. Kevin O’Leary, a self-confessed anarcho-capitalist – one who sees no role for the state in society – will be working for the CBC, a government-funded media outlet. This is beyond absurd. Talk about flexible principles! Murray Rothbard is turning in his grave.

Whatever Amanda & Kevin choose to do , either seperately or together
will make for very stimulatingly watching. Though their styles differ markedly, you must pay attention to their experience & speed of sound reactions. Both leave one with a lot to think about-every broadcast. My thanks to them both

It would be nice to see Amanda replace Fred Langan when he chooses to retire.

I would very much appreciate seeing Amanda Lang on CBC Newsworld. She offers very intelligent, insightful journalism and is by far Canada’s FINEST AND BEST anchor!!

  8. Jeff

It would be interesting to see what they had in mind for Amanda.

As for Kevin O’Leary? Lol! CBC might as well just shut the news department down right now if they hire him – goodbye credibility. The man is a total joke.

As a watcher of Squeeze Play I am glad to see that Amanda Lang will still be on TV as I really like her insights. She could do better for a side kick than Kevin O’Leary. He is so tiresome you just want to slap him and send him Stateside where he belongs. It doesn’t surprise me that he is quite willing to take money from the public purse. As long as he makes a buck I think any “principles” he has are pretty flexible. Government gravy is only bad when it doesn’t enrich him!

Amanda & Kevin will definitely bring the ratings up for CBC. I bet new investors will abound when the program starts. This tandem is very effective in presenting easy-to-understand views of the market/business news. Good luck to CBC. Perfect show and perfect timing !!!

    Re: Amanda Lang

I am most impressed seeing Amanda Lang reading the National. She has the personal skills and grace that make watching the program a pleasure. Hope we see more of Amanda in the future, especially her financial comments.

March 1st 2010 I just watched Kevin O’Leary tell of how he is a psychopath, psychopathic towards the environment.
He believes it is alright to kill animals recklessly in the pursuit of money. Specifically alright to kill ducks migrating, because ducks are stupid relative to humans, because they are relatively stupid , its okay to kill them when they land to rest in Alberta Tar Sands toxic waste ponds.
