26 Jan Pie in face is assault, not terrorism
A Liberal MP thinks pie tossing protestors are potentially domestic terrorists.
Newfoundland and Labrador MP Gerry Byrne is rightfully upset someone attacked a Minister, but he should have his head examined for attempting to overreach and claim some type of violation of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA).
PETA, of course, has claimed credit. Going so far as to suggest it was part of the campaign to end the seal hunt. Byrne see’s this alleged collusion as the reason for the potential violation of the ATA.
I think a grave crime was committed as well - but it already has a name and several sections of the criminal code devoted to the nuances. It’s called assault. And, if someone at an organizational level coached and encouraged the illegal behavior they should be charged as well. Throwing something in a person's face with the intention of silencing them (or harming) is assault. To what degree and what flavour of assault is up to the Crown Prosecutor. It doesn’t matter if the victim is a minister, backbench MP or any regular unelected Canadian - it just doesn’t matter - it’s assault. They should be charged, put on trial and tossed in jail.
Someone asked me today if politicians worry about getting hit with a pie. To answer: Yes, I’ve been asked about it more than once.
My advice: if you’re not hurt the only real reaction is to laugh. An overly angry reaction will always reflect badly on the victim. Shock and humility with a wry laugh. It's the best course of action. And, if you can muster a joke afterwards - try letting the audience know what flavour the pie was.
So, am I trying to outlaw clowns with this move too? No. Just activists who can’t stop acting like clowns.

She should have thrown a shoe instead. Pies are so 2003. So are draconian anti-terror laws.
Nice way to trivilize actual terrorism Mr. Kennedy.
As a plus, the word “terrorism” has now officially lost whatever political potency it still had.
