09 Jan Rex Murphy pushed to the Post

The National Post has welcomed with open arms a public broadcaster and former marquee Globe & Mail columnist apparently smarting from being pushed out of his coveted Saturday spot.

Rex Murphy’s official debut in the Post was today. It looks like it was a foray into the right-leaning opinion pages that finally landed him in hot water with the new Globe management. The Cross Country Checkup host - and long-time CBC host and pundit - penned an A-section screed for the Financial Post, December 5th, on climate change.

rex murphy leaves globe Rex Murphy pushed to the Post

Why isn’t Rex Murphy with the Globe?

It seems the article was only what “got the ball rolling” in the words of one insider. Less than commentary in a rival paper; several sources have suggested Globe and Mail Editor in Chief John Stackhouse was simply unimpressed with the increasingly esoteric opinions of this elder-statesman of Canadian opinion. One example widely cited is this CBC appearance (subsequently praised by Terrance Corcoran of the Post.)

So, “climate change denial” is widely rumored to have been the last straw. Perhaps sensing the loquacious Newfoundlander would prompt unneeded bad PR if sacked; I'm told Stackhouse offered to move him to Mondays. As evidenced by the quick decampment to the National Post, it seems that went over like a tonne of bricks with Murphy.

The move was announced this past Thursday by Peter Mansbridge on CBC’s the National, where Murphy still resides as one of the few opinion columnists left on television.

Editor of the Vancouver alternative weekly the Georgia Straight, Charlie Smith is pleased with the move.

“I don't know if Murphy jumped or if he was pushed by Stackhouse. Regardless, I'm looking forward to picking up a Saturday Globe and Mail without one of Murphy's typically ill-informed attacks on climate-change scientists.”

Well it looks as if the answer is: Rex Murphy was pushed a little and jumped.

Rex Murphy jumps on to the Post…read Titanic. Bye bye Post, bye bye Rex.

    Smooth move, Rex…perfect timing…

  2. Sean Cummings

    Rex Murphy rocks.

  3. Graham Watt

Good riddance to the prolix blowhard. He was giving Newfoundland & Labrador a bad name.

  4. Noel Baldwin

    Hi Ian,

If the answer is, Murphy was “pushed a little and jumped,” why is your title “Rex Murphy pushed to the Post?” It doesn’t seem entirely accurate, even if it’s a little more sensational.

  5. noopenmindsthere

Here is one more piece of evidence the Globe’s editorial policy is to provide its readers not with a variety of opinion, but a one-sided view in lockstep with the social planners. Truth in jounalis and open-mindedness on its opinion pages are relegated off the page, as the Globe and Mail marches to the drum beat of the social planning advocates and political activists from the professional protester and extremist side of the spectrum.

  6. Ian Capstick

I suppose one action (the move to Monday) lead to another (Rex up and leaving). But the real reason: I enjoyed the alliteration and it was short. ;)

  7. DennisF

Fascinating to see how you’re basically not allowed to disagree with the left these days, especially relating to global warming hysteria. It’s clearly become a political agenda. No dissent permitted.

  8. Ron

If you are a member of the Canadain MSM, you must not challenge the left wing religion of global change nor must you in any way imply that the Liberals are other than the best choice of government – to do so will get you removed and shunted off to the wilderness (and yes, the NP is the wilderness because it refuses to bow at the alter of left wing ideology.) Canada is in decline because we no longer have freedom to debate issues – the left states it position the MSM advocates it and the citizens are left to agree or shut up. Welcome to Canada.

  9. noopenmindshereither

Funny how if you post a comment that disagrees with the hard left slant to this website how it gets deleted within minutes. Shows how DennisF’s comments are so right – if they are left on for anyone to see. Which I doubt. In fact they’re probably be gone before this post gets up – if in fact it even does!

  10. Paul

A sad and shortsighted move on the part of the G&M. Murphy was one of the more credible voices at the Globe. He calls a spade a spade and doesn’t care if his views fly in the face of whatever the current conventional wisdom happens to be. Now there is much less reason to pick up a copy of the Globe on Saturdays.

  11. Mike Stokes

No surprise there since the G&M is another shill for the Global Cooling Deniers.

  12. MP

Yes Dennis and Ron, climate change is all an MSM plot. The National Post is the only truth out there. Obviously Canadians can’t handle the truth, since the National Post has lost how many millions since its birth?

  13. djb

The Georgia Straight? Is that piece of crap still publishing?

It doesn’t matter where Rex is being published, as long as we can read his work. He’s a brilliant man, unafraid of any criticism, and profoundly grounded when it comes to principles, ethics, and morals.

I’ve worked in the Canadian print media for over 30 years. I’ve seen and worked with the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

Rex is one of the Good.

  14. M.Deville

National Post: Congratulations from the bottom of our hearts for having Rex. We love this man who is honest and full of knowledge. He’ll give the post some interesting reading.
    Thank you,

    md

  15. Ran Biddleton

Hey DennisF – why stop at secondthot – it’s pretty clear you need a few more.

And Ron – what other theories conspiratorially concocted by Strangelove Scientists are you working overtime to discredit – gravity maybe? How about the so called “laws” of thermodynamics? What other “debates” do you want to have? Evolution? Moron.

  16. albertaclipper

Yes the left is such an all encompassing, compassionate group. If you don’t agree with them you are a jackbooted nazi.

  17. A Freeman

MP, climate “change” is a conspiratorial plot indeed and it has nothing to do with a changing climate and everything to do with destroying freedom, democracy and empowering Leftarded alarmism akin to “the sky is falling.”

True to form, should anyone challenge the hyper-religion of the truly environMENTAL, they are marginalized as “deniers.” Ha!

To DENY the sun as a part of our climate is what the environMENTALists do best. ClimateGate exposed what anyone with a functioning brain could clearly; scam, fraud, snake oil.

Hey, MP, If one has to lie to make a truth, guess what the value of that truth is? (Anything for the revolution, comrade, eh?)

Sung to the famous KISS tune:
“I want to mock Al Gore all night, and all of every day.”

Rex Murphy remains the lone voice of reason on an otherwise vast and scandalous, treasonous waste of taxpayers money. Let’s see how well the CBC could do if it actually had to compete in the open marketplace instead of enjoying their protected media racket; my guess is they would quickly vanish from the airwaves and none too soon.

  18. Furtz A Bootbomb

Rex will fit in much better at the Post.
He’d fit in better with the Fox network than the CBC as well.

  19. JDot

    Wow.. re: Rex’s then, picture.

I had no idea Rex could rock a fro…

  20. B.L. Wagner

I, for one, will not miss Rex. Now, if CBC would just dump him, my blood pressure would return to normal. Murphy is a troglodyte, long past the time for retirement.

  21. Stan

Censorship from the left, what else is new?

  22. Robert in Calgary

What’s the matter MP? Aren’t you allowed to call it manmade global warming anymore? Oh…right, the science doesn’t support the theory! HA!

  23. rufusrastasjohnsonbrown

Great news! Now there is no reason to ever read the Mop & Pail.If Stackhouse did not like Murphys expose opinion piece is that not an admission that the scammers include the Mop & Pail editorial board.

  24. Abe Froman

When Rex left Newfoundland, the average IQ of that province dropped to handicap status.

The ‘believers’ on the left are being proven wrong as each colder year with no hurricanes comes to pass. They (the enlightened ones in the MSM) will achieve ‘dolt’ status within a couple of more years.

We don’t have a climate problem and smart people like Rex know it. The buffoons in the MSM who surround him will have lost so much face they will have a hard time figuring where their pie hole is once the AGW sham is finally abandoned.

  25. Dr. Mark Bourrie

Obviously, you can’t even dare question the ethics of scientists who have stacked the climate science peer review process without finding the likes of the the editor of the rather tedious Georgia Strait agitating to have you fired, and weaklings at the Globe giving in.
I was not a huge Murphy fan, but the guy can write and his arguments were often intriguing.
    There can be no dissent.
    There can be no debate.
Everyone must follow the script that’s handed to them.
    Scary.

  26. DN

I’m curious…what exactly is the objection to Rex’s opinion piece above? He doesn’t come down on one side or the other. All he’s saying is that Climategate demonstrates that the UEA CRU scientists (and those with whom the offending emails were exchanged) have lost the objectivity that is the hallmark of sound empirical science, and have become advocates for a cause rather than investigators of a phenomenon.

This is news? Anyone who disagrees with this assessment (a) hasn’t read the emails (or more importantly the dreadful computer code files released along with them) and (b) doesn’t understand the scientific method. Speaking as a scientist, Jones and his cronies appear to have broken every rule in the book – including violating the UK Freedom of Information Act. In Canada, offences against the Access to Information Act entail fines and jail time.

As for why Rex was pushed and/or jumped…well, that’s obviously an artefact of the relentless homogenization of opinion that is the hallmark of the Glob. It’s a little ironic that this parting of the ways appears to have the same cause as Climategate: the Glob, like the UEA CRU, has abandoned objectivity in favour of advocacy, and is enforcing dogma rather than reporting the news.

Circulation statistics show how well that’s working out.

  27. Ford Prefect

The deniers are now the Global Warmers. If they had any proof they would not have to make anyone leave. The fact that they have zero anything they have to stamp their feet and call people names. Rex hit the nail on the head and they do not like it. Globle Warming is Mann made as in Mike Mann. Stop Global Freezing buy a Hummer

  28. Bill Doskoch

Ron and DennisF are hilarious. They paint global warming and the dangerous climate change that is occurring as a “left wing religion” or “hysteria” when the costs of such change will be borne by people of whatever ideologial stripe. All Murphy was doing was peddling the same disproven denialist nonsense or offering intellectually empty schoolboy taunts on the issue. Given that Rex couldn’t raise the level of his game and became tired and predictable, perhaps it’s for the best he went to the National Post instead of being published Monday in the Globe and Mail.

  29. Bill

When you stick to peer-reviewed science, climate change hasn’t been in debate in years. And Rex is not a climate scientist.

When all peer-reviewed climate science says the sky is falling (metaphor only), perhaps we’d be better off listening to scientists.

And of course, Rex is entitled to his opinion on anything. Even when he is wrong.

  30. Anon

I for one won’t miss Rex. I have to admit that I often wondered how Rex made up his mind about things (which was why I stopped reading or watching him a long time ago).

  31. Paula

I hope dear Rex Murphy LEPT to the Post because I for one am LEAPING with joy at his arrival.

  32. Paula

In other words, I am delighted.

  33. Paula

Oh for crying out loud brain! I’m delighted because I love the Post!

  34. Rob H

The Globe is not a newspaper, its role is to publish left wing pap. Rex got smart and also got a promotion to a paper that gets all the news out.
Sorry Lefties, and by the way, what was is Rex said about global warming “science” that was wrong?

  35. Ellie in T.O.

    What liberal media??

  36. Peter McCaffrey

Good News doesn’t come too often these days. This is very good news, finally Rex will have a truly NATIONAL

  37. Peter McCaffrey

Great news! Finally Rex will have NATIONAL coverage! I don’t like all his items, but, they give us an opportunity to accept or reject whatever we want!

The less edititing, personal direction, and government interference we receive – the better off we are!

    Go Rex!

  38. Hermesacat

The timing of this may be perfect poetic justice for Murphy!
The latest news out today on the future of Canwest papers, including the National Post, is that all are up for immanent sale (within 3.5 – 4.5 months), despite strenuous objections from Leonard Asper. The Aspers no longer call the shots at Canwest, its creditors do, led by Scotia Bank.

So, Murphy has jumped ship to a paper about to
    A) Be sold, and possibly made extinct, its assets liquidated (leaving Murphy out of a columnist job), or
    B) Be sold to new owners who are unlikely to possess the same zeal the Aspers do for confusing Canadians and spreading right-wing disinfo. on any number of topics, including climate change, middle east peace, and environment & health
(also likely leaving Murphy out of a job soon, as new Post owners are likely to be as non-accomodating as the Globe is to Murphy’s “eccentric” propaganda – I mean opinions!

Now, if only CBC would see the light and dump Rex too (perhaps along with Don Cherry). Maybe Danny Williams would take pity and hire Rex as press secretary!

  39. Bob Devine

I always thought Rex was a real straight shooter. My only wonder about him was “How in the name of heaven did he ever get tangled up with the likes of CBC and The Globe & Mail?”

  40. Average Joe

Rex is one of the best!!!

  41. canadiansense

Big Money, Energy Companies, Banks are invested in the AGWism (Carbon Market Cap and Trade) Organized crime in Europe has already made Billions. Billions in a Global Tax and next ponzi scheme is a rolling along.

Most governments have been pushing this agenda for years.

  42. stephen ottridge

Am I ever glad I canceled my subscription to the Globe when they published nothing on the Climategate news. Now this. Absolutely disgusting behaviour by Stackhouse ably abetted I’m sure by Simpson.

  43. BD

I had been wondering the last few months as to how long the Globe and Mail would keep Rex around as he seemed to me one of the few folks at the G&M who still thought for himself. The fact that Rex would leave speaks volumes on the “independence” of the G&M’s columnists and the editors desire to ubercontrol the message going out. Sure…and they call Harper a control freak.

  44. mrbill

The Left seems to be in a quandary. Since the fall of the Berlin wall and their Soviet overlords, all the red diaper babies have needed a place to gain their attention again.

And the two places that seems to have attracted their new religious support is Environmentalism, and Islamism. The latter which will happily kill everyone of them.

The enviro choice I can fathom from the agnostic/athiest Leftist types…but to follow the Islamist down a murdering, homophobic, women hating theocratic rat-hole is quite odd to say the least…especially with the usual hangers-on of the left, feminist gays et al.

  45. crjc

Rex was in the Grope & Flail? I never knew, but then I’ve hardly read it since the NP started publishing. Last time I saw a copy was in September. I got far enough in to see some clown was still referring to Manuel Zelaya’s impeachment as a “coup” months after the Associated Press article which originally described it that way was shown to be false. I put it down. I can forgive mistakes, and even poor grammar. I have never forgiven a newspaper that has deliberately lied to me.

It’s hard to get the NP here because they usually sell out by 9am. I’ll make sure I go down early on Monday.

  46. amicus curiae

looks like someones at the Post at least has a brain, and the nous to see a smart move in the shift of a more awake society, I will be browsing the Post from now on:-)

  47. Scott

Serves Rex right, he should no better than to question GW, he’s lucky he wasnt tarred and feathered for his uncensored comments.
He is one of those DENIERS, he is a DENIER…

  48. Herman

Rex Murphy, one of the few journalists still daring to speak his mind, and speak it eloquently.
His piece on the global warming fraud was right on the mark, utterly refreshing among the shrill sounds of the Gore/Suzuki sheeples.

One of Canada’s foremost wordsmiths. Keep on writing Rex, and don’t let anybody tell you what to think or write. You’re better than them all.

  49. Scott

If you watched Rex on CBC you noticed Peter Mansbridge smirk at the end, Peter knows to follow orders, he knew Rex had basically said he likes little girls or worst on TV and was toast..

  50. Tom

Rex Murphy is incredibly intelligent, I’ve never read the G&M, I have read the post, so I’m happy he’s here. Wonder how long he’ll still be on Communist Broadcasting.

For those few folks that call him down for his ‘climate change’ views, can you kindly explain to me what he says that is wrong? I’m quite sure CBC would never air his viewpoint if they could find a way to say he’s out to lunch. When I went to school in the 70’s, the big scare was Global Cooling. Now it’s Global Warming with billions of dollars expected to be invested in ‘Carbon Credits’, carbon taxes being put on, and Al Gore turning his inconvenient fable into a money maker, making him the first Global Warming Billionaire.

As one poster said, REX ROCKS. I don’t care if I sometimes disagree with him, I still have a great deal of respect for him and his opinion.

  51. Vinceo

Rex was one of the two writers worth reading at the Globe and Mail. The other is Margaret Wente – wonder how long Ms Wente will last?

  52. Revnant Dream

One thing I really like about Newfies, (In Alberta thats a compliment.)is the fact almost none will take crap from anybody or be demeaned. I respect that. Most Albertans have a real admiration towards that attitude, living as we do in a free egalitarian Province. Rex is not taking their BS. I bet he smelled this a long while ago. Than made arrangements. No sycophant he.

  53. Cam MacKay

Rex Murphy was one of the last honest brokers on CBC. I can not think of any reason to watch that network anymore. I will definately be reading murphy in the Post.

  54. John Catley

Things are changing fast in the UK. There is a significant shift in the reporting in the MSM. More and more articles questioning the AGW hypothesis are appearing, and more and more politicians are admitting to being sceptical.
The ball is rolling and is picking up momentum.
One day, the “good guys” will be recognised for their integrity and journalistic skills.
    Good luck to you Rex.
    The UK supports you!

  55. Bill Doskoch

It would seem to me that in the conservative mindset, thinking for one’s self means being reflexively opposed to the notion that the world’s climate is warming as a result of our burning of fossil fuels — which isn’t thinking at all. Sheeple indeed.

  56. Dave H

Rex was the only MSM voice to discuss the hacked emails. Wake up people, Copenhagen could have been a far worse disaster (and still might be)if those hacked emails didn’t receive some level of exposure. Rex deserves a medal for helping to bring this issue to light.

To those who claim the peer reviewed science is indisputable – you’ve completely missed the point, and failed to pull yourself away from the Pravda-like ramblings of the CBC and G&M long enough to do your own research. Science has been compromised by collusion among climategate scientists.

I will be subscribing to the online addition of the National Post.

  57. Roger Sterling

It is fitting that Rex would move to the NP as his writings on climate change are basically a thesaurus-enhanced regurgitation of Lorne Gunter, who himself holds on to disproven assertions on the subject like a pit bull. On top of that, while I respect Rex’s right to disagree and opine on any subject, the inordinate time he spent castigating the coalition (well after its demise) was like reading criticism of the pet-rock fad . . . Rex, learn to move on. Time for him to pack it in.

  58. rufusrastasjohnsonbrown

The worlds climate is cooling. It is caused by co2 and we only have another 8 weeks to do something.Wait in 8 weeks we are into spring. The worlds climate is warming. It is caused by co2 and we only have another 12 weeks to do something.I detect a pattern here, might it be seasons and weather.

  59. KP

I think the Globe made a big mistake. More and more they shy from the “unpopular.” How does that inform anyone or any debate? I don’t agree with Rex’s columns sometimes but it was one of the few parts of the increasingly middle of the middle of the middle Globe that could get a real discussion going. Does boring sell papers?

  60. KDK

Funny…”Hi. I’m passionate about creating social change through open communication”

Um… usually ’social change’ is social engineering and doesn’t involve open communication. How about letting your words, via facts, do what they will without your intent to ‘create’ social change. I know, putting out facts generally creates ‘thinkers’ and those thinkers usually have questions that need answering.

Just an observation and my opinion. AGW is a fraud and the minuscule amount of CO2, even if doubled would only produce a 1C change and that is based on our current temp gauges, which are generally variable by that much and must be adjusted for heat islands, which is usually down, not up.

  61. Alberta Bob

Mr. Harper is going to be replacing the current Governor General in the not to distant future. I believe Rex Murphy would be an ideal choice. He is intelligent thoughtful man with a great analytical mind. I have listen to Rex Murphy for many years and think his views on many subjects resonate with of concerns to Canadian. And of course, he appears on the CBC on a regular basis. Another criteria started by the Liberals. How could they object.

  62. Hugh Wood

I wonder if Rex didn’t get pushed out because of his last column in the Globe. He was trying to poke fun at Obama for being named Time magazine’s Person of the Year.

He neglected to notice that Obama, had, er, been named Person of the Year in 2008.

  63. BernardP

Rex Murphy’s contrarian opinions would have had more chance of seeding doubt amongs leftist if he had stayed with the G & M. At the National Post, he’ll be preaching to converts.

  64. Jim Westfall

@Bill – show me the proof that burning fossil fuels is the cause of global warming. Bonus points if you present anything with a Hockey Stick graph attached.

  65. Aldyen

I am a man-made climate change “believer”, if that is the opposite of a denier. But I have great concerns about the over simple and very expensive solutions a majority of Canadian academics and environmentalists promote. Having said that, in everything I do and write I make it clear that I believe the efficient alternatives are enforceable “product standards”. In other words, I could not be more pro-GHG regulation.

And Rex Murphy has had me on his radio show 3 times. By comparison, David Suzuki and Dr. mark Jaccard have–on three separate occassions that I know of–refused to debate me in front of an editorial board or on air.

I do not agree with Rex’s position on climate change. But I have always found Rex open to debate. I cannot say the same for many of the leaders of the pro-climate change crowd (to which I belong), who tend to resort to personal attacks when they find they lack the knowledge required to make their perspectives factually.

  66. JR

Free thinking is not allowed in the Globe apparently. Maybe Dr. Suzuki should slap the cuffs on Rex too.

  67. Werner

“Climate change denial” should really read “truth-telling on man-made global warming hoax”. If that’s what got him “fired”, then more power to Rex and a hex on all lefties and their media.

  68. Erik

    Rex who?

  69. Erik

Rex’s ego is huge, as such, his journalism has suffered over the years, to the point he’s a sensationalist journalist now and no longer an investigative journalist, as well it is very obvious he thinks all his words are pearls of wisdom as they ooze from his lips, when in reality, they are more aptly called random mubblings from an egomaniac.

  70. sarah

Please, Mr. Harper, do not appoint Rex Murphy to the Governor General’s job. He could not express his opinion on anything. He’d be mute.

Welcome to the Dark Side, Rex. Finally , you’re home,

  71. Ed_B

Cancel my subscription to Globe and Mail please!

To deny Canadians the truth of Climategate is intolerable. I see even Suzuki spouting off about jailing “deniers”..

Gezz.. I thought we defeated the fascists during WWII!

  72. Kevin Shinduke

AGW is the biggest science scam of our lifetime.

Hopefully the culprits in East Anglia, NASA and the IPCC will go to prison; however, I doubt it.

  73. Ian Lidster

I guess diversity of opinion was just a little too much for the G&M to handle. A ‘free’ press, indeed.

  74. Bonjohnvi

Rex is fantasticly poor at understanding science, in seeming inverse proportion to his vocabulary. He is the most eloquent expresser of ignorance I have ever heard.

  75. Brian Wall

Rex was the only reason I bought the Saturday G&M. I agree with most posts stating that he attacked scientific methodology rather than the conclusions drawn from that flawed methodology. Unfortunately for the G&M, I’ve found the complexity decreased and subject matter simplified over the past two years. It reminds me more and more of the electronic, watered-down media that the younger generation is growing up on.

Anyway, a new Post reader has been born.

  76. richard

The problem with Rex’s screeds in the Globe on climate change was that he didn’t really check his facts very well. He often cited people as climate scientists who were in fact economists or statisticians. He also based much of his argument on old and discredited data. If this is the quality of his journalism then the Post is a perfect fit.

  77. James

Rex hopped over the line of rationality a while ago. It’s been a gradual progression from independent thinker to just plain crack-pot. It’s charming in it’s own messed up way.

  78. Joe Wallach

    Rex,

The left wing media are overpopulated. I felt that The Globe and Mail was a left-leaning paper, not nearly as strident in that regard as the Toronto Star, but nevertheless part of the main stream of left-wing ideologues. Glad that the National Post has picked you up. That is their win and the Globe and Mail’s loss.

  79. Joe Wallach

The G&M loss is the National Post’s Gain. Good on you, Rex

  80. truth seeker

While I love Rex – really bright guy – great command of language and whats really going on – but for some reason over the last couple of years his op-ed was getting the tone and feel of supporting nut bar right wing crap with climate change being the corner stone> I have been schocked at his growing blatant partisan toward right wing nonsense, including at times painting Harper in a good light – I now know that I wasn’t the only person sharing this growing concern and stopped reading Rex 1 year ago when he hit obvious in his politics and he lost all his sense of amazing humour. My reading Rex was a ritual on Saturdays with my lunch – I miss his humour – I now put him in the bin of the idiots unfortunately like Ben Stein and Dennis Miller. For him to go to National Post, which is in palliative care only speaks to his current dementia ….he also needs to be taken off the CBC …I for one will miss his old self – sorry Rex thats how I see it …

[...] Rumour has it that Rex Murphy’s jump from the Globe to the National Post was precipitated by his very unwelcome musings about Global Warming and Climategate.  The Globe editor must have had a lot of complaints from left-wing readers because he apparently wanted to bury Murphy’s column in the less prominent Monday edition. (And why doesn’t that work when we complain about James Travers to the Star?) [...]
